Swim updates 3/25/10
F/S Girls:
With nearly a full roster our girls showed up ready to swim. With almost every swimmer improving their times, the girls made their coach proud with one of our newest swimmers, Brenna Dickinson, emerging as one of our fastest Breast Strokers on the F/S team. Unfortunately as well as we did, we were unable to compete against a Carlmont team that consists of year round swimmers and lost 50-134.
F/S Boys:
After a very close meet against Westomoor the F/S boys wanted to taste victory for the first time this season. And a victory they earned, as they easily dominated a much smaller Carlmont team. With Nick Dallimonti earning a 1st place in the 50 free, the boys F/S team won 84 - 60
Var Girls:
After a great start to the season last week we were hoping to continue our success against a competitive Carlmont team. Lauren Arshakuni won the 100 Free again, yet still fractions of a second from qualifying for CCS and many swimmers stepping up to swim difficult events, like Leahna Brochon and Andrea Carranza who swam the 500 free for the first time and Erika Myers who swam the 200 IM for her first time all earned points for the team. Unfortunately this was not enough to overcome our 6 missing swimmers, and we lost 56 - 96
Var Boys:
After blowing out Westmoor, the boys were hoping to have a similar performance against Carlmont. However, Carlmont would not be so easily defeated and took 1st place in 6 of the 9 individual events. However Woodisde had a much better team performance and took 1st place in all 3 relay events. This meet was very competitive. During the meet there were 2 ties and 4 lead changes. Going into the last event we were tied with Carlmont 75 - 75, which meant we had to win the 400 Free Relay. The race was dramatic and exciting with both teams going back and forth for the lead, but it was Woodside who finished first by .39 seconds to make the final score 85 - 79

F/S Girls:
We have many new swimmers that joined our F/S team, some with little to no swimming experience. Though most were excited about our first dual meet, they were also nervous about the competition. The meet went well, not one F/S swimmer missed their event, they all finished their events, and earned us points. Special note goes to Allie Medina for swimming the 100 IM, Megan Hawley and Laura Stelma for swimming the 50 Fly, two events that most F/S swimmers do not want to swim, let alone first time swimmers. And though we had Westmoor outnumbered we were still missing two swimmers and could not take advantage of our numbers. Westmoor had some very fast F/S swimmers and we were only able to take first place in 1 event. However, even with their fast swimmers we were able to keep the meet close but lost 86 - 94
F/S Boys:
Growing from a team of 2 last year to a team of 6 this year, the F/S boys are looking to improve on last years record. Going into Westmoor we did not know what to expect form their F/S boys, but we knew our boys would be ready. And they swam well, taking first place in 7 of the 11 events we swam, led by returning swimmer Andrew Fong who got fist in both the 50 back and 100 Free, and new comer Christian Burgeous who was a double winner in the 50 Free and 100 Back. However, even though we were faster than Westmoor, they had us outnumbered but we were still able to tie them 71 - 71.
Var Girls:
After last years success we are looking to start the 2010 year in the same manner. With a very young squad, half our varsity team are 9th and 10th graders, we are looking to make a splash in the much more competitive Bay league. And a splash we did. With 2 of our CCS Medley Relay team returning, lead by team captain Lauren Arshakuni, the girls are looking to return to CCS and get a few wins on the way. Our girls began the meet on the right foot with Lauren Arshakuni, Natasha Kafai, Alicia Grima, and Emma Adams qualifying for CCS in the 200 MR and improving on last years time. Our girls took first in 7 of the 11 events with double winner Emma Adams in the 200 Free and 100 Fly and Alicia Grima qualifying for CCS in both the 200 IM and 100 Back., And with additional help from bringing up some other F/S swimmers, like Megan Bordy who swam the 200 Free and Christina York who swam the 200 IM and 100 Breast, we were able to cruise to an easy victory 92 - 61
Var Boys:
After dominating the Ocean league to win the 2009 Ocean PAL Championship, our boys lead the way for us to move into the more competitive Bay PAL League. Hoping to continue their swimming ways and get back to CCS the boys went to Westmoor with an almost full roster. Our boys, Kiefer Hickman, Winston Chapman, Brian Bligh, and Grant Chapman, not to be outdone by the girls, also qualified for CCS in the 200 Free Relay. Then the boys went on to take 1st in 6 of their 11 events, led by Brian Bligh in the 200 Free, Winston Chapman in the 50 Free, and brother Grant Chapman in the 100 Free, the boys continued their winning ways by beating Westmoor easily 93 - 67.

Players -- Remember that Physical Paperwork is due in by Jan. 19th (this Tuesday).
As the 2010 Swim Season rapidly approaches we (Coach Nick and Coach Moses) are looking to reach out to prospective Freshmen Swimmers. Anyone with an interest in joining the last year's PAL Ocean Division Champions should contact either Coach Nick or Coach Moses.
Woodside Swimming anticipates another strong performance this year with many swimmers returning from last year. However, as is often the case, the team needs NEW SWIMMERS to help continue the growth and maturation of Woodside Swimming.
Best,
Coaches Moses and Nick

It has been a long time since there has been any swimmers at CCS to represent Woodside. However, after the first swim meeting we knew that with Alicia Grima that would all change. What we didn't know, was that it would change in a big way. We went from 0 swimmers in the last 5 years to having 10 go to CCS this year.
Girls:
Alicia Grima came into the season as a 9th grader who had already earned CCS qualify times in every event she swam. With her we had hoped to build a relay team or two on the girls team to accompany her to CCS. And the girls did it with ease with the help of Lauren Arshakuni, Hayley Parker and Ruth Milne, earning a CCS time in their very first attempt in the 200 Medley Relay. Now, earning the CCS time for our second relay became more challenging. Without Ruth we needed a 4th to help make the CCS times. We first looked to Ali Williams, but due to injury she was unable to swim most of the season. So our next look was at sophomore Natasha Kafai who proved herself on many occasions and helped in qualifying our second relay team for CCS.
Our 200 MR Relay team improved their times at CCS to come in second in their heat. Beating rivals Sequoia, El Camino, Carlmont, MA, and Aragon. We finished 26th out of 37. A very good showing for our first time.
Our 200 Free Relay missed their best time by tenths of a second, yet we were still able to beat one of our prime rivals, Sequoia. We finished 39th out of 43.
Alicia Grima had qualify in two individual events, the 200 IM and 100 Back. Seeded 5th in the 200 IM at 208.22 she dropped her time in finals to 2:02.25 to finish 5th overall and earning her an All American time. In the 100 Back she was seeded 10th at 59.85. Like her 200 IM Alicia dropped her time to 56.57 earning her another All American time and 3rd place overall in this event. In total Alicia earned 30 points for Woodside which put us 18th place out of 38 teams at finals. A very impressive effort from our young and hard working wildcat.
Boys:
With Coach Nick coming in and bringing most of his water polo team with him, the boys earned two spots at CCS in the 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay.
After setting a new PAL record in the 200 Free Relay, Bernard Archbold, Winston Chapman, RJ Duffner, and Grant Chapman improved their times even more at CCS by dropping almost a full second. We finished 31 out of 44.
With Kiefer Hickman taking Bernard's spot int eh 400 free relay the guys wanted revenge on rival Sequoia (who they lost to in the 200 Free Relay). Not only did they beat Sequoia easily, but they also won their heat beating Aragon and Carlmont as well. Even more importantly they dropped nearly 3 seconds to improve their time and finished 35 out of 43.

F/S Girls: 8 talented young girls, many of them swimming for the first time, were plagued with injuries most of the season. Though we started the season 1 - 0, we could never take advantage of our talent afterwards. For every meet except for one thereafter we were missing swimmers due to injuries and lost to larger teams. We finished the season 1 - 4 and in last place. But, PALs is another story. We enter PAL with 7 of our 8 girls healthy and ready to swim. Each girl had to be strategically placed and swim their best for us to compete. A few girls such as Andrea Carranza (100 IM and 50 fly), Abby Reed (200 Free), Melanie Cooper(50 fly in the medley relay), swam events that weren't their favorites, but still improved their times and gave us much needed points. Along with Erika Myers winning the 50 breast and Leahna Brochon winning the 100 IM then finishing 2nd in the 100 Free, our F/S Girls finished 2nd in PALs.
F/S Boys: Alec Hooper and Andrew Fong outperformed our expectations. By posting personal best times in the finals Alec Hooper finished 4th in the 50 free and 5th in the 100 free and Andrew Fong finished 8th in the 50 free then 2nd in the 50 back, and surprisingly enough the F/S boys finished 4th among 6 teams.
Var Girls: Like the F/S girls our season was full of injuries and missed swimmers, but with a larger starting roster we were able to finish in a 3 way tie for 2nd place with Hillsdale and Terra Nova at 4 - 2 respectively. Going into PALs with 11 of our 12 swimmers I felt confident that we could take sole possession of 2nd place and beat both Terra Nova and Hillsdale. (El Camino's first place team was too large for us to beat in PALs). After the results from trials our girls were in position to do just that, with almost all our swimmers in finals and/or consols. However, at the last minute we lost one of our swimmers to a family emergency and another to work. The later swimmer was not as painful to us because she only missed one event and her alternate was a WHS swimmer. Unfortunately for the first swimmer we lost, she missed her individual events and the alternates were from Terra Nova which would cost us. But even with the chance of 2nd place slipping away, our girls performed exceptionally well. Our 200 Medley Relay (Alicia Grima, Ruth Milne, Hayley Parker, Lauren Arshakuni) finished 2nd and improved on their CCS times. Our 200 Free Relay (Natasha Kafai, Lauren Arshakuni, Hayley Parker, Alicia Grima) also finished second and earned a CCS time. Our individual stand outs were Natasha Kafai who finished 6th in both the 200 IM and 100 Fly, Ruth Milne 2nd in the 100 Breast, Hayley Parker 4th in the 200 Free and 3rd in the 100 fly, Lauren Arshakuni 2nd in the 50 free and 1st in the 100 free, and Alicia Grima who not only finished first in both her events (200 IM and 100 back), but also set new PAL records for both events. In the 200 IM Alicia broke the record of 2:10.01 by going 2:08.22 and then broke her own record(that she set on Thursday) in the 100 back by going 0:59.85. Final results 3rd place.
Var Boys: After finishing 5 - 1, the boys were looking to cleanse that 1 blemish to a nearly perfect season by winning PALs. With a full roster and swimming their best, the boys posted some impressive results. Almost every finals had 2 WHS swimmers. Our relays won 2 of the 3 relay events. The 200 Free Relay (Bernard Archbold, Grant Chapman, Winston Chapman, RJ Duffner) not only won 1st but also set a new PAL record of 1:33.85 and the 400 Free Relay (Kiefer Hickman, Grant Chapman, Winston Chapman, RJ Duffner) had an amazing swim and dropped their time almost a full 7 seconds to qualify for CCS. Individual stand outs were Kiefer Hickman who finished 4th in 200 IM and 6th 100 Back, Andy Bligh finished 6th 200 IM and 4th in 500 Free, Grant Adams finished 5th in the 100 Fly and 3rd in the 500 Free, RJ Duffner finished 3rd in the 50 Free and 3rd in the 100 Back, Winston Chapman finished 2nd in the 50 Free and 4th in the 100 Free, Bernard finished 2nd in the 100 Breast and 4th in the 50 Free, and Grant Chapman got 1st in the 200 and 2nd in the 100 free to lose his first race of the entire season. However, even with loss he improved his time and lead his team to a total of 310 points( 90 points more than the next team) and a first place finish in PALs.
Final Tally
F/S Girls: 2nd
F/S Boys: 4th
Var Girls: 3rd
Var Boys: 1st
We have one more week of swimming for our CCS swimmers. CCS trials will be 5/15 and finals on 5/16.
|

The first day of PAL swimming trials are complete and our swimmers have started it off right. Most of them posting personal best times and finishing in consolations (top 12) and finals (top 6). We even had several swimmers who are seeded number 1.
F/S Girls: With 6 swimmers swimming 11 events they placed 7 in finals and 4 in consolations. Double finalists were Abby Reed in the 200 and 50 free, Leahna Brochon in the 100 IM and 100 free.
F/S Boys: 2 swimmers swimming 4 events placed in finals 3 times and consols 1. Alec Hooper being the double finalist in 50 and 100 free.
Var Grisl: With 11 swimmers swimming 15 events they placed 8 in the finals and 4 in consolations. Our double finalists were Hayley Parker (200 free and 100 Fly), Natasha Kafai (200 IM and 100 Fly), and Lauren Arshakuni (50 and 100 free).
Var Boys: With 16 swimmers swimming 19 events they placed 11 in finals (more than any other team) and 6 in consols. Grant Chapman was a double finalist in the 200 and 100 free, and is still undefeated for the season with only 2 more races left.
These are just a few higlights among the first day of trials. Day two of the trials is 5/7 with the last day being on Saturday 5/9.

| Swim Season starts off with a Splash! |
If you have not visited the pool lately Woodside Swim season is under way and they are beginning the season with a splash. They hosted SSF in their first dual meet last week, and although they were missing some key swimmers the team came out victorious 3-1.
Frosh-Soph girls were lead by Captain Andrea Carranza as they won 94-61 sweeping all events with first place finishes.
Frosh-Soph boys were lead by Winston Chapman as they beat SSF 63-42 taking first place in all events but one.
Varsity Girls won 108-27 taking first place in every event. They were highlighted by Alicia Grima (freshman) who is a CCS qualifier in the 200 Free and the 100 Back, Lauren Arshakuni (freshman) who took first in the 50 Free and the 100 Free, and Natasha Kafai (Soph) who won the 200 IM and the 100 Fly.
The Varsity Boys lost a close one 80-72, and were highlighted by Steven Rhodes who took first in the 500 Free and helped the 400 Free Relay take first as well.
Season Records:
F/S Girls – 1-0
F/S Boys – 1-0
Var Girls – 1-0
Var Boys – 0-1 |

Results for 4/23 swim meet vs. Hillsdale:
F/S Girls:
Missing two girls and being outnumbered by Hillsdale, our F/S girls had to fight just to keep it close. Megahn Blomdal lead the team with 2 first place finishes in the 50 fly and 100 back and Melanie Cooper filled in at the 50 back and took first place. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough against the larger team, and we lost 64 - 80
F/S Boys:
Hillsdale did not have a FS team so our boys swam against themselves scoring a personal best in the 50 and 100 free.
Var Girls:
We went into this meet tied with Hillsdale for 2nd place. Though we were missing a swimmer, we got 2 swimmers back. Ruth Milne and Ali Williams who both stepped up and brought the team much needed points in their respective events, with Ruth taking first place in the 100 breast. We did not start the meet off well, going down 2 - 12 in the very first event, but our girls kept swimming and kept getting closer with each race, but even with Lauren Arshakuni (50 free and 100 free) and Alicia Grima (200 IM and 100 Back) taking first in both of their events. Finally going into the last event (400 Free Relay), down by 7 points, we needed to take 1st and 2nd to win the meet. With some last minute switches, our A Relay (Lauren Arshakuni, Natasha Kafai, Haley Parker, Keli Mahoney) took first easily, it came down to our B Relay (Emily Hoeksema, Claudia Hendershaw, Veronica Hendershaw, Alicia Grima) beating the A Relay. Going into the last leg of the 400 our B team was behind a good 10 yards. However, Alicia Grima exploded off the blocks (55.09 for her hundred split) and in dramatic fashion was able to catch the other team and out touch her at the finish to give us the win 88 - 83.
Var Boys:
The boys just seem to be getting better and better with each meet. Andy Bligh, Kiefer Hickman and Dimitri Frangos swept the 200 IM (1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively). Winstong Chapman, Robert Duffner and Bernard Archbold swept the 100 free (again 1,2,3 respectively). Grant Chapman, Winston Chapman and Steven Rhodes finished 1,2,3 in the 100 free as well. Grant Chapman swam a great meet with 2 individual wins in the 100 and 200 freestyle and contributed to our two first place relays, the 200 and 400 free relays. We had great swims by Daniel Stiener in the 100 back, Jon Savoca and Brian Bligh in the 200 free and Robert Duffner in the 50 free and the 100 back. The boys cruised to an easy win 115-57.
The boys are hoping to have another strong showing this week as they swim against undefeated Terra Nova(5 -0) for a share of 1st place in P.A.L. Ocean.
Season Totals
F/S Girls: 2 - 3 4th place
F/S Boys: 3 - 1 Tied 2nd place
Var Girls: 4 - 1 2nd Place
Var Boys: 4 - 1 2nd place

Results for 4/16 swim meet vs. Jefferson:
F/S Girls:
Jefferson did not have a F/S team so the girls all swam against themselves. Melanie Cooper got the victory in the 100 IM and 50 Breast while Leahna Brochon took 1st place in the 50 and 100 Free.
F/S Boys:
Because of the success of so many F/S swimmers, we have been moving up swimmers to Varsity at each meet. We are now down to 2 F/S swimmers on the boy’s team, Andrew Fong and Alec Hooper. However, Jefferson had no F/S boy’s team, so like the girls they swam against themselves, Alec Hooper taking first in both the 50 and 100 Free.
Var Girls:
A team once with numbers has slowly been depleted throughout the season. The team started with 16 varsity girls on the roster and is now down to 11 with only 8 swimming today. Fortunately, we swam against Jefferson who had only 1 swimmer. Lindsey Constantino beat their swimmer in both the 200 IM and 100 Breast. I would also like to note Claudia Hendershaw who on more than one occasion filled in as our #2 swimmer in the 500 as well. An event which few girls (Keli Mahoney is our #1 500 swimmer) are willing to do. Final score 90 - 7
Var Boys:
Missing only 1 swimmer, and with most of the F/S team moved up. Our varsity boys out-swam the Jefferson team taking first place in all 11 events. Of those 11 they took 1st and 2nd in 10 of the events and swept the 50 Free (Winston Chapman, RJ Duffner, Steven Rhodes) completely. The team was led by the Chapman brothers who took first place in all their events. Grant took first in the 200 and 500 Free and Winston took first in the 50 Free and 100 Back. Keifer Hickman also took first place in both of his events 200 IM and 100 Free, the boys won 128 - 39.
Season Totals
F/S Girls 2 - 2 Tied 2nd
F/S Boys 3 - 1 2nd
Var Girls 3 - 1 2nd
Var Boys 3 - 1 Tied 2nd
2 more weeks of the season left and then PALS which we will be hosting here on 5/6, 5/7, and 5/9 |

Here are some pictures from the PAL swim meet. |

Day two of PAL trials.
F/S Girls: 2 swimmers in 3 events and we earned 2 final spots and a consolation spot. Erika Myers was a double finalist in the 50 and 100 breast stroke.
F/S Boys: No swimmers on this day.
Var Girls: 6 swimmers in 6 events and we had 3 final spots and 2 consolation spots. Among them we had Ruth Milne earn the numebr 2 spot in the 100 Breast and Alicia Grima who earned the number 1 spot in the 100 back while setting a new PAL record of 1:00.70.
Var Boys: With 9 swimmers in 9 events we earned 5 final spots and 3 consolation spots. Bernard Archbold earned the number 2 spot in the 100 breast and RJ Duffner earned the number 2 spot and just missed qualifying for CCS in the 100 back by .53 seconds.
With trials completed we now head to PAL finals which will be on Saturday 5/9 at WHS. Start time is expected to be at 1pm.
We have a good chance to win, qualify for more CCS times, first places, and even a few PAL records. So don't miss the excitement and come see your Wildcats swim.

F/S Girls:
It is going to be a tough season as our very spirited team will be competing against a league full of year round swimmers. However, with that said, many of our swimmers swam very well, with almost every swimmer improving on their times. All our 200 Free swimmers(Laura Stelma, Cara Jack and Megan Hawley) swam under 3:00 for the first time, Jasmine Montoya dropped 6 seconds in her 100 free and Brenna Dickinson took first place in the 50 breast. Score 57 - 128
F/S Boys:
With a team of 7 the boys, we could not compete against a full Sequoia team. However, many of the boys had improved their times with noticeable improvements by Rocco Ernani in the 50 and 100 free. Christian Bourgeois and Andrew Fong took 1st place in the 50 Free and 100 back. Score 42 - 123
Var Girls:
The girls did very well, lead by our double winners Alicia Grima (200IM and 500 Free with CCS times) and Lauren Arshakuni (100 Free - undefeated for the season and 100 back - won by .36 seconds). New comer Emma Adams also had a strong performance losing in the 200 Free by only .22 seconds. The girls (Arshakuni, Kafai, Adams, Grima) also qualified for CCS in the 200 Free Relay and came very close in the 400 Free Relay. New comer Serena Houghton did very well improving on her times in the 100 fly and 100 breast as one of the many freshmen we have swimming on varsity, however even with this success we were unable to beat a team full of year round swimmers and lost 76 - 96
Var Boys:
The boys did very well showing off their strength in freestyle winning the majority of the freestyle events including sweeping the 50 Free (Winston Chapman, Kiefer Hickman, Ryan Dunlap) and Grant Adams a double winner in the 100 Fly and 500 Free. The boys are approaching CCS time in the 400 Free Relay(Brian Bligh, Winston Chapman, Dimitri Frangos, Grant Chapman) and improved on their CCS 200 Free Relay (Hickman, W. Chapman, Bligh, G. Chapman). With the boys swimming strong in their freestyle events we were able to get the meet to be within 2 points. However our depth in the other strokes was costly as we lost the 100 back and 100 breast and resulted in a final score of 78 - 92. |
