Congratulations to Lori Mendelsohn and Daniel Filipcik. Lori and Daniel led the Wildcats this weekend in Salinas (Toro Park) at the CCS Championships, and qualified for the CIF State Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno!
Lori is the first female athlete from Woodside ever to qualify for the State Championships in Cross Country. She passed 5 runners over the last mile to finish in a qualifying position.
Daniel is making his second trip to State. Before Daniel, the last Woodside cross country runners to go to state were Andy Bupp and John Hannon in 1988.
Lori finished 12th in the Division II race and 20th when combing all 5 CCS Divisions. Daniel finished 4th in Division II and 10th in all of CCS. Division 2 is by far the most competitive Division in CCS.
Both the boys and girls teams ran exceptionally well. The boys team has been ranked as high as 14th in CCS and 7th in division II this year, but dropped out of the rankings last week. They ran an inspired race and finished 5th in Division II, narrowly missing a trip to State, and 11th overall in CCS. Both positions are the highest ever by a Woodside cross country team (two years ago the women finished 7th).
The girls ran without their number two runner Krista Nightingale, but still managed to finish a very respectable 15th.

| 2 runners qualify for State! |
Congratulations to Daniel Filipcik and Lori Mendelsohn for their great individual efforts at the CCS playoffs. Because of their pursuit of excellence, both have qualified for the State playoffs. Lori Mendelsohn is the first female athlete at Woodside High School to qualify for a state championship event. Woodside is very proud to of these two athletes for their great accomplishments this year. |
The wildcats had 6 players who earned all league honors for their impressive cross country season.

| A Great season for the Wildcats! |
|
The Wildcats' Cross Country team had another successful year with Coach Nick Carr and super runner Daniel Filipcik who finished as the #1 runner in the PAL.
As a team they also flourished with the boys' team finishing 2nd in the PAL, 5th in CCS (Division 2), and ranking 14th overall in the San Jose Mercury, as well as having Daniel Filipcik and Peter Gunn ranked in CCS.
On the other end, the girls' team did well and looks to improve next year from a solid year this yea. They finished with Lori Mendelsohn ranked 4th in the PAL, and as a team they finished 5th in PAL and 10th in CCS (Division 2), 24th CCS (All Divisions), and they had two girls ranked in CCS--Lori Mendelsohn and Krista Nightingale.
Both the boys and girls have strong frosh/soph classes that will add a boost to next year's team.
Congrats, Cats!

PAL Championships
The Woodside Varsity Boys' Cross Country Team broke the school record for a team total (83:20 – 16:40 per runner) at the Crystal Springs Cross Country Complex on their way to a 2nd place finish at the PAL Championships.
Kyle Feuerhelm (15:49, 2nd) and Peter Gunn (16:02, 6th) led a Wildcats team that finished 2nd among all 17 PAL teams. Other varsity participants included sophomore Chris Waschura (16:42, 17th), first year runner and all-league soccer goalie Mac Hart (17:23, 23rd), Jack Mattuecci (17: 24 25th) Juan Garcia (18:20) and Joab Camarea (18:33).
Woodside has competed on the Crystal Springs Course since the early 1960s. Breaking the school record is quite an accomplishment. Their time also places Woodside among the top 10 in CCS this season and 4th in Division II.
Last year two individuals from Woodside (Lori Mendelsohn and Daniel Filipcik) qualified for State. Woodside has never qualified at team. We are right there with Palo Alto for the final qualifying spot in the toughest CCS Division. Division II is led by Mountain View (#1 in the State), Gunn (#6 in the State), Palo Alto (ranked amongst teams to watch in the state), Woodside, St. Francis and Lynbrook.
Varsity Girls - The Lady Wildcats finished 10th missing CCS by one position. The young, inexperienced squad was led by Captain Ari Adler and first year runner Jerusha Inglis. Both qualified for the CCS Championships as individuals. Way to go Ladies!
Other notable performances- Senior Charlie Ballinger placed 6th in the JV race. His time was fast enough to move him up to the varsity team for the CCS Championships. Great job, Charlie!
Freshman Scott Feuerhelm placed 7th in the Boy’s Frosh race. |
