11/23/12 -- Happy Holidays and Club Polo

Dear Water Polo Players, Parents, and Families,

I want to wish all of you a safe and fun Thanksgiving and holiday season. I am so thankful for my experience this year at Woodside, and look forward to future seasons coaching aquatics.

Thank you again to everyone who attended the water polo awards banquet. The night was very special, honoring the hard work of 34 young men, and it was great to see everyone out and having a good time together. I would like to thank all of the families for the very generous coach's gifts to Ryan and me. I was overwhelmed with the show of support and encouraging words throughout the season, and it all culminated that night. A sincere thanks to all!

I want to remind all water polo players to please attend the Fall Sports awards night at Woodside High School. This event is where scholar athletes and team awardees are recognized, and where all players receive their varsity letters and water polo patches.

Fall Sports Awards Night

Monday December 3, 2012

7pm in the PAC

Woodside High School

I also want to remind all returning players that it is critical to stay active in the off-season in order to build upon the success that we had this year. In order to build the program into a PAL powerhouse, we must have athletes who play multiple seasons of water polo each year, and at least one season of swimming is critical as well.

**If you are not playing another sport in Spring, you MUST compete on the WHS swim team!**

I will be coaching swimming this year, and I expect to see all freshmen, sophomores and juniors when the season starts on February 4th. If you are playing another sport at WHS, like lacrosse, please send me a quick email and let me know (or I will hunt you down), and you need to do a club swim team in the summer in order to condition for the Fall water polo season.

Playing club water polo during the winter, spring, and summer seasons is also very important. Do as many seasons as you can afford to – especially if you are a freshman or sophomore. The more you do early in your high school year, the faster you will get good and help build the team into a powerhouse. If you get your friends to do it with you, all the better (and you can carpool).

END OF 2012 SEASON WRAP UP -- 11/5/12

Sorry to everyone for all the uncertainty regarding when we will be having the end-of-the-season awards banquet. It has been a crazy two weeks for me, and figuring out how, when and where to host ~100 people has been very difficult to do with my other work.

AWARDS BANQUET - Thurs 11/15 @ 6pm

I am pleased to announce our awards banquet will be on Thursday November 15th at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Redwood City. Families can order what they would like to eat for dinner off of a special banquet menu (which I will post once I get it from the manager).

Schedule:

5:30pm - Decorate room

6:00pm - Families start arriving

6:30pm - Dinner begins

7:30pm - Awards ceremony

8:30 or 9pm - wrap up

**If you would like to eat, please be there at 6pm. If you wish to skip dinner and be there for awards, please be there by 7:15pm.**

If you would like to volunteer to help me organize decorations for the banquet room, please shoot me an email.

If anyone has access to a portable projector and screen, please let me know. I'd like to show slides of the boys during dinner.

TEAM PICTURES

Team pictures are in and will be handed out at the awards banquet. I have a couple reorder sheets in case anyone would like to order a team photo.

TEAM T-SHIRTS

These are in as well, and will be handed out at the awards banquet.

SHOOT-A-THON PRIZES

These will be handed out at the awards banquet as well.

***I am still missing a lot of pledges and donations from players who participated in the shoot-a-thon. Please bring this money in a sealed envelope with my name on it to Alvaro Calderon's (vice principal) office and have the secretary put it in my box. If you were elegible for a prize, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE THE PRIZE IF YOU DON'T TURN IN ALL THE MONEY YOU RAISED.***

Today was the first annual shoot-a-thon fundraiser, benefiting the Woodside Boys Water Polo Program, and I'm pleased to say it was a great success.

The atmoshpere was light and fun, the ten competitors had a great time, and most importantly, we managed to raise $656.50 in initial donations and pledges to benefit the Water Polo Program!!!!

I'm very proud of the boys who helped raise this money, and I look forward to handing out the prizes many of them earned at Monday's practice. Thank you to all players, parents, and generous family members for making this event a success!

Please remember to turn in your final pledge form, with all the money you collected (cash and checks) to Coach Luke at practice on Monday (10/29).

*And it's not too late to collect additional donations! If you happened to forget to bring your donations to the shoot-a-thon, or end up collecting more funds this week, PLEASE BRING THEM IN - They are still greatly appreciated and will help fund improvements to the pool facility and equipment for next year's team!

(09/13/12)

Congratulations to the Varsity squad on their first win of the season! Wednesday's game was a tough match, we trailed the whole game until the fourth quarter, and then we took the lead and never gave it back. I was amazed by the heart and guts our boys showed by finishing the game strong, and showing that they wanted that win more than the other squad. Great job gentlemen!

I was also very impressed by our JV squad, who played extremely hard and showed incredible improvement from last week, despite losing the game 12-6. At times, their defense was stifling, holding the other team to no shot on goal. They communicated very well, and found the open shooter several times. I am impressed by the potential of this team, and I think the more they play together, the better they will be! Great job gentlemen!

Thank you to all the parents and players who came to pizza after the game! We raised another $38 for the team fund! Let's try to get an even bigger showing at our next team dinner! Go Wildcats!

Lastly, I put the address of Homestead High School down below, next to the game times. Only NOVICE players should attend these games please, and be there on the pool deck 30 minutes before the game start time (you can leave for lunch on Saturday as long as every player has a cleared driver). **All players should have rides by now. If not, PLEASE call or email me ASAP.**

(09/06/12)

A big THANK YOU to all of the parents who supported our boys teams by coming to our matches this week. It was great to have folks on deck cheering us on in our first two competitions of the year. While the outcome of the Hillsdale game wasn't what we were hoping for, we were covered by the San Mateo Daily Journal, and you can read the varsity recap here:

[Copy and paste into your browser window]

http://www.smdailyjournal.com/article_preview.php?id=1754258&title=Knights%20top%20%27Cats

An additional thanks to those parents who were able to come to the parents meeting last night. We had a great turnout, a lot of volunteers signed up to help our program throughout the season, and I really enjoyed meeting all of you. I am very excited about our program, our school, and all of the wonderful people involved.

Special thanks to Erin Stockford and Rhonda Dallimonti who donated drinks for our two boys games this week. Without being asked to, they went out of their way to donate their time and money to help the boys programs. THANK YOU! Also, a big thank-you to my patient and supportive wife, Bernadette, who fearlessly helped run the desk at both games and also donated a huge bag of new first-aid supplies to the girls and boys teams. In so many ways, I wouldn't be able to coach again without her help and support.

I also want to recognize what an awesome turnout we had at the first official team dinner last night at Mountain Mike's in Redwood City! I counted over 36 people in one end of the restaurant around 8pm, and I know there were more family members in other areas and folks who came earlier and had to go. I collected receipts from 28 people total - which means $56 back to our program! If you still have receipts you can give them to your boys to give to me at practice -- If not, just remember next time to give them to me so we can get the donation at the end of the season. WHAT A GREAT COMMUNITY OF FAMILIES WE HAVE!!!! I hope everyone had a lot of fun -- I was definitely impressed.

GO WILDCATS!!!!

Message from the new coach:

Hello players and parents! I am very excited to be confirmed as the new boys water polo head coach at Woodside High School!

The hiring process has taken a while to complete, and I'm doing my best to get caught up with the season, so please bear with me as I go through some growing pains.

My first priority behind the scenes has been to try and get additional games on our schedule, as I inherited an empty season. While working on that, I have been trying to recruit new players, and coordinate with Coach Laura practice times and duties. It has been a rough first week!

I have uploaded the current (but not final) schedule for all BOYS practices and games. I will be handing this out today on the pool deck, but it will be on the website for reference. The most important message to parents: Come see our first game on Tuesday Sept. 4th at our pool! And please attend the PARENTS MEETING on *Wednesday September 5th at 6:30pm* on the pool deck. I will introduce myself to you all, discuss the goals for the season, and highlight some opportunities for parents to get involved and support the program.

Lastly, to ALL NEW PLAYERS: Practices for new players begin at a new time today: 4-5pm on Monday-Wednesday-Friday (see the schedule). The deadline for getting cleared to play is Friday August 31st, and all materials must be on Tuesday September 4th. There is a NEW PLAYER MEETING on Tuesday September 4th from 4:30-5pm on the pool deck, just before our game against Hillsdale.

I will have more information about team suits, fundraising for this year, and more games in the next few days.

Here's to a fun and exciting season of water polo!!!

Best regards,

Luke Plurkowski
