Volunteering at Sequoia Hospital offers you opportunities to enrich your life by giving your time and talents in the service of others.

Volunteers work in a variety of areas in the hospital. They meet others with similar interests and know they serve an important purpose in our community. Their presence adds humankindness to caring for patients and their loved ones. The one thing all Sequoia Hospital volunteers have in common is generosity: They give of themselves.

Stanford Hospital

High School Program

The High School Volunteer Program offers youth ages 16-18 an opportunity to volunteer in a variety of areas throughout Stanford Health Care.  High school volunteers provide valuable service to patients, families, and staff, while gaining experience and self-confidence.  

High School Year-Round Volunteer

Stanford is fortunate to have an outpouring of community interest in volunteering and this interest often exceeds our available positions.  If you remain interested in volunteering, are at least 16 years of age, and are available weekdays after school, please check our website for updates.

Summer Volunteer Program

The Summer 2017 program will run from June 12-August 7, 2017.  We have a limited number of opportunities so cannot guarantee every applicant a spot.  The Summer Volunteer Program is currently full.

Commitment

Volunteering can be a fun activity and very rewarding, but it is also a serious commitment. Volunteering requires that you will be willing to learn, work hard and be responsible and open to new experiences.

  • Volunteer one or two days a week Monday-Friday from 8am-6pm
  • Participants volunteer 6-8 hours a week
  • Volunteer a minimum of 40 hours (between June 12th thru Aug 7th; no service hours will be released until 40 hours have been completed)
  • One absence during the 8-week commitment 
  • Students will wear a Stanford polo shirt with black pants during their shift (shirt provided)

Please consider carefully whether this time commitment will fit your schedule as the departments depend on their volunteers.

Volunteer opportunities and roles

Our High School Volunteer roles include assignments in the Gift Shop; Information Desk areas; and Administrative areas. Students placed at the Information Desk areas escort visitors; provide directions; or run errands. Gift Shop volunteers assist customers; restock merchandise; etc.  High School Volunteers are not allowed to shadow, observe, or conduct research.

Time commitment

  • Year-Round Program: The minimum commitment is 100 hours - one shift per week for 3-4 hours, for 6 continuous months.  

    Summer Program: The minimum commitment is 40 hours - one or two shifts per week for 6-8 hours, for 8 continuous weeks.

How to become a volunteer

Please submit an application online. Once we review your completed application, we will contact you within a few weeks.

Next steps include the following:

  1. Group Interview:  We schedule small group (3-5 individuals) interviews to explain our program, requirements, expectations, and volunteer roles.  Each interview session lasts about 1 hour. Individuals also provide information about themselves including motivation, interests, and availability.
  2. Online Curriculum:  After attending the group interview, individuals are emailed a link, user ID, and password to access required curriculum for completion. This step can take up to 6 hours and must be completed before volunteer roles are assigned.
  3. Health Screening (TB test / vaccines):  All perspective volunteers will need to bring their immunization records on the initial visit to Occupational Health Services.  Based on review of  your immunization records, titers may be drawn and/or additional vaccination may be needed.  Please allow 30 minutes for your visit.
  4. Letters of Reference:  Submit two letters.
  5. Volunteer Orientation:  After the 4 requirements (above) are completed, individuals attend a 2 hour orientation to review policies, and additional program information.
  6. ID Badge / Parking / Uniform / Logging Hours:  At orientation, information about picking up a badge, access to parking, uniform, and logging volunteer hours are discussed.
