Thank you to everybody that helped WHS with the Millard Fillmore Trivia Hunt this year. The students did a great job and really stuck with it to the very end. Crossing the Atlantic in a wind-powered, lighter-than-air balloon had been the dream of adventurers since the invention of such craft The goal was finally achieved in 1978. Nearly 140 years earlier, in April, 1844, the new York Sun published an extra with the following headline: “Astounding News by Express via Norfolk! The Atlantic Crossed in Three Days By Flying Machine!” The 5000 word article describing the historic event turned out to be a hoax created by a destitute author who was “down to less than $5.00 in my pocket.” Although his writing did not bring him financial success, he is one of America’s most famous and venerated authors.
