How to Format a Writing Assignment

First impressions count. It is important to present your writing in a neat and clear fashion.  Woodside High School’s English and Social Studies Departments have agreed on a format for all writing assignments.  This sheet exemplifies the format requirements for margins, heading, title, font style, spacing and paper.  Following this format will show that you take pride in your work.

The layout of the assignment must be neat and presentable.  The margins along all sides of the paper are one inch.  The entire paper is double-spaced, beginning with your heading.  The heading includes your name, your teacher’s name, the name and period of the course, and the date.  Your last name and the page number belong at the far right corner. If you are word processing your paper, click on “view” on the tool bar and scroll down to “header and footer”.  This will allow you to place the name and page number on each sheet of paper you print.  Be sure to center the title of the assignment on the next line after you have entered the heading.

In addition to the spacing and format issues addressed above, you need to make sure that your teacher can read your work.  Write neatly in black or dark blue ink.  When you type or word process an assignment, use black ink and 12 point font in Times or Times Roman font.  Write or print on one side of the paper.   If you are using notebook paper, cut off the spiral fringe.  You want to impress your teacher and present your paper proudly.
