PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT GOALS

Evaluation of 2003-2004 Department Goals

1. To work with the department to see that the course objectives are in line with State and District standards. Also to continue to align curriculum to Ed Code.

The department has made the most progress yet in this area, each month focusing on a different standard. Each teacher gathered evidence of having met the standard and has kept evidence of student work. This process will continue next year. We continued to align the curriculum to the education code by including aquatics, all teachers doing self defense, science lab and one of our teachers including golf. Gymnastics will be added in the upcoming year. We taught CPR within our department this year to all freshmen with the free manikins we received from Sequoia Hospital for attending their training. The repeat class for sophomores had positive benefits for students and the department as teachers had hoped.

2. To incorporate information learned in the WASC Process into the course objectives keeping in mind the Focus Areas: Vision, Leadership and Culture, Curricular Paths, Powerful Teaching and Learning, Support for Student Personal and Academic Growth, Assessment and Accountability.

Ongoing- the department make-up session continues to work out well for our department.

3. To work around the construction while waiting for the pool, track and gym to be completed.

The pool and track have been completed and we are using both. The new gym has yet to be completed.

1.      To continue to use the One School Site Plan as the primary guide for course objectives.

        This is ongoing.

2.      Work to support the rest of the school curriculum in preparing students for the state mandated tests.

This will be accomplished by aligning our curriculum to the standards (which require reading and writing). Having met the standards this year, we have accomplished and are continuing to finish this.

7. To provide an evaluation of the goals accomplished for the 2003-2004 year.

        Done

3.      Continue to improve sustained silent reading.

The department has changed this, and now each teacher meets with his/her individual class for SSR; it is working out a lot better for the teachers and students.

4.      To offer new selections or selection that have not been taught in a while to both the Freshman and Sophomore programs.

The new selections offered this year were golf and swimming.

9. If selected, to incorporate the new equipment received from the federal grant into both programs.

        Woodside was not selected.

10. To again offer swimming in the Freshman and Sophomore programs and to ensure that all teachers are certified to teach swimming.

Done, although one teacher was unable to become certified, but will be this summer.

11.To continue to research the possibility of adding athletes and cheerleaders back into our Sophomore program.

The PE department is trying to do this, having lost one section to the world studies change. More sections may be lost if the dance team gets PE credit. It is always a challenge to validate the physical education program. The department wants to ensure that all students take a comprehensive PE class from a certified PE instructor and not earn PE credit from an off campus coach or a teacher who does not have a credential in PE. When students receive credit from these sources, they do not meet the state-mandated standards that are included in our program.
