    ATTENDANCE POLICY:

As an absent student what do you do?

Regular attendance is necessary to get good grades. You must check your own attendance daily (3rd / 4th period) to learn if your absences have been cleared. Letters will be mailed home informing your parents of excessive absences.

How do you clear an absence?

    1) You must clear all absences within five(5) days, including the first day of absence. For example, if you are absent on Monday, February 6th, you must clear the absence by Friday, February 10th, even if you don't return to school until the next week. If you don't clear it, the absence becomes a cut.

    2) Absence can be cleared by a parent phone call to the attendance office or a parent note to be delivered to the attendance office. The attendance office number is 367-9750 ext. 4238, or the recorder number is 367-9750 ext. 4020. Call anytime during the day.

    3) Check your attendance record, daily, 3rd/4th period by examining the PAM Report posted in your 4th period class rooms. Look to see that the Unresolved Absence mark ( / ) has been changed to some other symbol--as below:

    A = Activity, C = Cut, H = Health, S = Suspension, T = Tardy, U = Unexcused, W = Warranted,
/ = Unresolved Absence, 0 = Error or Absolved absence

Clearing your absence must be completed by 3:00pm on the fifth day, or it will become an automatic CUT.

    4) If you cut class, the absence can not be cleared.

    5) If you are detained by a teacher, nurse, guidance advisor or administrator and are late to class, get an NCR pass to class from this person. It is your responsibility to turn the pass into the attendance office after the receiving teacher signs it.

    6) Students must get a Permit to Leave from either the nurse, attendance office, or an administrator before leaving school for any reason. The white copy must be signed and returned to the attendance office. If a student leaves without permission, an automatic cut will be given. No one can excuse the student after the absence.

    7) If you have a question about your total number of absences (cleared and uncleared), you may request a printout from the attendance office or an administrator.

What happens if you cut a class?

    1) If you are found out of class without a pass after the tardy bell, you will be directed to go to class or to the office.

    2) Attendance will be recorded on your report cards.

    3) Teachers can require you to serve detention for cuts or excessive tardies. If you don't go when assigned, the vice principals can give penalties which could be as severe as suspension from school.

    4) Teachers place a great deal of weight for grades on class participation. Cutting or missing class will mean you will have too few participation points. If you have too few participation points, you may fail to meet class objective which could result in a lower grade.

    5) If you cut class, the teacher does not have to allow you to make up missed work.

    6) If you are declared "habitually truant" (8 single period cuts), you will lose these privileges:

    A) Work permits B) School sports C) Extracurricular Activities

    Woodside High School Dress Code

The students should present themselves in a manner that abides by school dress standards. Attention should always be given to neatness, cleanliness, and safety. Dress should also avoid extremes that bring undue attention to the student, and in doing so, disrupts the educational process.

No head coverings are to be worn where No Hat signs are posted except for medical and religious purposes. No hairnets or doo rags may be worn on school property. Bandanas, other than the school orange Wildcat bandanas, are not allowed.

Bare feet, bare chests, bare stomachs (midriffs), bare backs, bathing suits, shorts with less than a three-inch inseam, see-through clothing, strapless and tube tops are not acceptable.

Clothing that exposes private body parts or undergarments is not allowed. Spiked jewelry, spiked belts and dangling belt chains longer than six inches are not allowed.

Clothing, buttons, jewelry, and armbands with letters, pictures, or insignias that are profane, vulgar, or advertise drugs, alcohol, tobacco, harassment/violence or gang affiliation are not allowed. Any apparel, jewelry, accessory, or manner of grooming which, by virtue of its color, arrangement, trademark, or any other attribute, denotes membership in an unauthorized group or gang is prohibited.

Any student wearing gang colors, while making gestures that symbolize gang membership or demonstrating known gang behavior of any sort will be referred to the administration and subject to the Woodside High School Behavior Policy. *

Students enrolled in classes where long hair, loose fitting clothing or other items of clothing present a possible safety hazard may be subject to a specific dress code. In addition, students representing the school in athletics or other activities may be subject to more specific requirements. Appropriate attire at school events such as dances will be specified on the tickets.

Any student who violates the dress code will be subject to the disciplinary action identified below. Inappropriate items will be confiscated, and students in violation of the dress code will be required to cover or change into appropriate clothing as needed.

     Appropriate Action

    1st Offense-Administrative warning
2nd Offense-Administrative referral, parent contact, conference with AVP and detention

3rd Offense-Formal conference (involving AVP, student and parent) and possible suspension

     * Approved by SDMC March 24, 2003

*See the Woodside High School Behavior Policy for specific rules governing behavior. Any student wearing red (including burgundy) or navy blue (except for jackets, coats, backpacks and shoes) will be referred to the administration and subject to the WHS behavioral policy.

    School-Wide Tardy Policy

Any student arriving to school late due to special circumstances is to report to the attendance office for proper clearance before going to class. Students are expected to communicate with their teachers about any ongoing issues that result in chronic tardiness.

      A.       No free tardies

    B.       Beginning with the first tardy, the student will be assigned an in class detention to be served on the day of the tardy or the next day.

*Students who are tardy to 1st and 2nd periods will serve the in class detention immediately after class (the beginning of brunch.)

*Students who are tardy to 3rd and 4th periods will serve the in class detention immediately after class (the beginning of lunch) or, if the teachers prefers, after school

*Students who are tardy for 5th or 6th periods will serve the in class detention immediately after class unless they have a 7th period. If so, it will be done at the discretion of the teacher.

    C.       In class detention will be served at a time and place when it is most convenient to the teacher, not the student.

    D.       In class detention can be served with the teacher who assigned it or with another teacher on a collaborative plan.

    E.       Students who are tardy will sign in on a school-wide form supplied to every teacher.

    F.        Failure to serve the in class detention will result in the assignment of an additional in class detention. Failure to serve a second in class detention will result in a referral to the assistant principal or additional penalties at the discretion of the teacher.

    G.       If a student is 5 or fewer minutes late for class, he/she will serve 5 minutes of in class detention. If the student is more than 5 minutes late, he/she will serve 10 minutes of in class detention. If a student is more than 10 minutes late, the in class detention will be at the discretion of the teacher.

    H.       A pass from a staff member excuses a tardy.

    I.         A student who is deemed to be chronically tardy to a particular class (after the 3rd tardy) will be assigned an after school detention by the teacher. Parents may be contacted at this point.

    J.        Once the student has been assigned an after school detention, the next tardy will result in a teacher referral ( see tardy referral form) to the Administrative Vice Principal. The referral will result in a parent contact by the A.V.P.
