H
ow our program works...
Woodside students
are referred to YAP
by teachers, school administrators, self-referrals
or by one of the local collaborating law enforcement
agencies. The youth and their families are
given an overview of the program and the participation
guidelines as set forth by the school or referring
agencies. Confidentiality is respected at all
times. Next, with the family and youths participation,
a plan of action and involvement is developed.
Depending on the
needs of the family and the youth, services
may include, tutoring (homework coaching), mentoring
by a caring adult with similar interests and
making connections to school activities as well
as recreational, community service and job opportunities.
Classes and workshops on academic and life skills
are also offered. Participating students meet
regularly with YAP
coordinators who provide support
as needed and monitor the students attendance
and participation in the various
YAP sponsored activities. Families
are encouraged to participate in parenting classes,
and receive assistance, if desired, in negotiating
the school system and connections to other social
services.
