| Wildcats win 3rd in Forestry Challenge |
|
Boulder Creek, CA — Thirteen students from Woodside High School participated recently in the 2012 Santa Cruz Forestry Challenge, one group of a total of 69 high school students from 9 schools from the Santa Cruz and Bay Area region. The event was November 7 to 10 at Redwood Christian Park, near Boulder Creek, California. Students from Woodside placed 3rd out of a total of 17 teams.
One of the highlights for the students this year was the opportunity to weigh in on a nearly-approved Timber Harvest Plan for a 96 acre managed forest. After spending a day visiting the site to collect field data and interact with natural resource professionals, students made recommendations on some particulars of the THP, with the goal of creating sustainable forest products while leaving behind a healthy and resilient ecosystem. During the Challenge, teams of students also completed field training, followed by a field test, to assess their technical forestry knowledge and data collecting skills.
“This is an excellent opportunity for students in our green academy to learn about some of the complexities of natural resources management.” said Woodside High School teacher Ann Akey. Marielena Lopez, a senior at Woodside, summed it up as follows: “I love it here! Forestry has taught me a lot of life skills like responsibility, leadership, and overcoming challenges.”

Woodside's Green Academy has worked hard all semester and is ready bring Bike Shed back into operation. Ryan Heywood, a WHS alumni and bike mechanic extraordinaire, is providing his skills and expertise to train Green Academy students this year. | 4 Colleges Toured for College Day 2012 |
WHS celebrated its 4th Annual College Day on Wednesday, October 17, 2012.
EVERY WHS student will focused on touring, preparing, testing, applying, and attending college!
9th graders boarded buses and went off to our one of four local college campuses: UC Berkeley, Stanford, Santa Clara University, or San Jose State.
Sophomores and juniors took the PSAT or the PLAN/ACT tests. These tests were fully funded by an outside donor and were free of charge to every student. These tests gave the student and us valuable information about their readiness for college.
Seniors reported to Bradley Field before going into the PAC for sessions about after high school options.
Check out some of the pictures below from WHS College Day 2012. |
| Introducing Principal Diane Burbank |
|
On Wedneday, May 30, the Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Diane Burbank as Woodside High School's new principal. She will commence her new position with us on July 1.
Principal Burbank comes to us with a wealth of experience, having served Prospect High School in Saratoga as principal for the past five years. In 2011, Ms. Burbank was selected as "Principal of the Year" by the Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce. She also served Aptos High School as principal for five years prior to her current position at Prospect. Principal Burbank has two Master's degrees from Stanford University, one in Public Policy Analysis and another in Education. Ms. Burbank has also worked at several local schools during her career, including Cupertino High School, Gunn High School, JLS Middle School in Palo Alto, and Newark Junior High School. Ms. Burbank is also participating in the Stanford Principal Fellows Program.
Ms. Burbank comes to us with great enthusiasm and energy that I know will infuse our school community with great promise and continued growth.
'Welcome, Principal Burbank, to the Wildcat family! |

Starting November 6th, Maureen Campbell, Administrative Vice Principal, will be sharing her office with our new staff member, Taylor. She is a trained Facility Dog from the Canine Angels Service Teams (CAST) located in Grants Pass, Oregon. As a Facility Dog, Taylor will be a full-time staff member who will accompany Maureen during her work throughout the day. Taylor is an apricot colored standard poodle (orange for Woodside) that we feel will be a wonderful asset to our school community. Poodles do not shed nor do they produce allergic reactions in humans. Taylor has a calm and gentle demeanor that will be beneficial in assisting Maureen in her work with students, staff, and community.
Maureen attended an amazing three day team training in Oregon this past weekend with the CAST team, students and adults with special needs, parents, and many volunteers.
We are looking forward to introducing Taylor to the entire Woodside Wildcat Community!
For more information regarding the CAST organization and programs, visit: www.canine-Angel.org |
